Today, I decided to have the day off.

Posted on 2 December 2024 by Brett Jackson

It’s been a crazy few weeks, and I am absolutely shattered. The house has been neglected, so I decided to take charge of the kitchen and tidy all the pots and pans that have been collecting on the side for the last couple of days, and while doing that, I have been watching the Kingsman film on Netflix.

Watching something while doing a tedious task really cuts the monotony of the task at hand, and I breezed through the kitchen.

Tomorrow, I plan on going back to work, with some renewed energy 🙂

Bought myself an early Christmas prezzy for the study.
We built a snowman!!!

  • I bought a Minecraft advent calendar!!
  • We Built a Snowman!
  • We went to the Meadowhall shopping complex near Sheffield, spent some time in York, and started our Christmas shopping, woohoo.

And to finish off this week, I’ve also added some snow to the website (desktop only, so we dont lagg the mobile readers) and a Christmas countdown (look for Santa 🙂 )

How would knowing the future change the way we live today?

Posted on 27 November 2024 by Brett Jackson

If you knew what would happen in the future, would you try to change it?

Imagine if you went back in time to 2018.

Would you try to warn everyone about the pandemic?

Would you hoard rations in your house so you didn’t need to go out?

Would you invest in zoom shares and make stacks of cash when zoom became the most used video platform?

How about going back to 2001? Would you try and warn everyone in the twin towers?

What about the 1970s, would you invest in Apple or Microsoft?

How about Jack the ripper, would you warn the police, or the victims?

What happens if you know the future, but you don’t do anything about it? If you knew about world war 1 and ww2 and the concentration camps? Are you to blame because you didn’t stop those horrific times?

What are your thoughts? Please write them in the comments at the bottom of this post.

Wu ji bi fan – Too much of something is not always good.

Posted on 21 November 2024 by Brett Jackson

I love writing, and anyone who knows me, knows I love languages too.

Sometimes, when you love something so much, it’s easy to eat, sleep, and speak that subject, for example, I love Minecraft, and I know some people who eat, sleep, and speak cooking, or football.

This week, my wife and I realised that we were spending too much time watching netflix, and not doing much else with our creative evening downtime.

Last week, we decided to stop watching netflix series, and instead, we switched to watching films.

As part of this decision, we recently watched The Karate Kid with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith.
In the film, Dre Parker has moved to china and Jackie Chan (Mr. Hann – the maintenance man) teaches 12 year old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) Kung Fu to help him with life balance.

One of the things he teaches his student is the phrase “Wu ji bi fan” which means ” Too much of something is not always good”.

This takes me back to watching too much netflix, and how we substituted watching 4 x 45 minutes episodes every night, for watching a film and breaking it up into pieces instead.

Before the switch from series to film, we would typically sit down to watch an episode at lunch time, then go on with our day to view more episodes at tea time, leading up to when we would go to bed.

The benefit of change from series to films was almost immediate.

When we were watching series episodes, we would be hooked throughout the episode, and eagerly wait at the end of the cliffhanger episode for the 5 seconds it takes to load the next episode.

When watching a 1.5 hour film, we would watch the first 45 minutes at lunch time, and go back to work, then at tea time, we would be eagerly waiting to watch the rest of the film. This way it cuts down our watching time, while still giving the same dopamine hit or waiting for the next part of the film from lunch to tea time viewing.

Once we had finished the film, we had completed our dopamine hit and we’re able to do something else, so, we spoilt ourselves and went to the fair (and I bought a toffee apple).

First toffee apple in years 😄

I noticed that this is similar to my writing life, as I’m constantly eating, sleeping, talking writing, and that’s great, after all, I’m an author, but…

When you constantly output, you are emptying the proverbial bucket, with nothing to fill it, so sometimes you just have to stop.

Stopping and being, means taking things in, going out, looking at events as they unfold around you, and taking the chance for your brain to rest.

When you break from writing, your brain can rest, and you start to take things in, refilling your creative buckets, and refreshing yourself.

This starts to create a life balance, and you are less likely to burn out.

What do you do too much of that you would probably have a break from?

Major error with website, now sorted :)

Posted on 20 November 2024 by Brett Jackson

Just spent several hours fixing a rather major error with the website. So, if you happened to come by earlier and something was a bit broken, it turns out it’s because of a damaged update file.

Not to worry though, I caught it in time and fixed it after about 2 hours, yay 🙂

My Writing Life

Posted on 14 November 2024 by Brett Jackson

Today I managed the following

  • Moved all newsletter subscribers to BrettishBooks.com from Substack.
  • Edited 1 Chapter
  • Started a paper diary and moved all my appointments into it.
  • Tried to Appeal against the Substack suspension.

I also added a new backup method to save all my work, including books, manuscripts, audio recordings and more.

What went worng this week, and how I fixed it.

Posted on 14 November 2024 by Brett Jackson

This week was going well, until I tried to log into substack to write this week newsletter, and I was greeted with the following messages.

Now you may be thinking… ooh Brett’s been naughty… but I can assure you I haven’t.

I have sent an appeal to Substack to let them know that I have adhered to their terms and conditions, so that something like this wouldn’t happen.

I have researched how long it might take for my account to come back, and was shocked at what I found.

On Reddit there are loads of people complaining about Substacks bad reputation for support, and how people have randomly been suspended for no reason. This lead me to do the following:

  • I searched for a newsletter plugin for my website
    • I then configured the newsletter plugin
    • I added all the email addresses I regularly back up
    • I wrote my newsletter, and I scheduled it.
    • I considered other ways I could add audio to my newsletter.

All of this has had to happen in 2 days, so that I can get my newsletter out this Friday.

So far, so good. I am still waiting for Substack to unsuspend my account, and tell me why they suspended it in the first place, and then I will consider the future for the newsletter.

Let me know what you think? Should I stay with Substack, or should I break away from them, and carry on using the newsletter plugin?
