The Jason Apsley Series: Books 1-3 Boxset: A Time Travel Adventure

Posted on 28 March 2025 by Brett Jackson

Humour, mystery, and a time leap back to the 1970s. Could you relive your life and change the past? However, history always repeats … or does it?

… Jason Apsley is about to find out.

Book One — Jason Apsley’s Second Chance

Following a bizarre twist of fate, Jason finds himself in 1976, forty years in the past, six months before he’s due to be born … fair to say, a somewhat tricky situation.

Although faced with the challenges of living in yesteryear, time travel offers Jason a second chance and an opportunity to improve his life. Which, considering the debacle of his first forty years, wouldn’t be difficult.

As our unwitting time traveller soon discovers, meddling with the past has consequences for the future. However, Jason soon realises history must change … lives are at stake.

Book Two — Ahead of his Time

Five months have elapsed since Jason Apsley grabbed his second chance. It’s now 1977, and those time-travelling calamitous months of 1976 are buried in the past. Life is perfect … or is it?

Will the arrival of another time traveller cause Jason’s new life to unravel? As the chaos ensues, his new loved ones begin to question his very existence.

While Jason desperately tries to hold his new life together, the evil Colney brothers – a family with whom Jason discovers he’s inexplicably entwined – unearth the truth and plan to take revenge.

Will time repeat, or can Jason, once again, alter the future?

Book Three – Force of Time

Ten years have elapsed since Jason Apsley grabbed his second chance, and the events of the late ’70s are now just a distant memory … or so he thought.

When the unwelcome arrival of his nemesis brings the inconceivable events of the previous decade to the surface, causing the inquisitive Detective Inspector French to delve into Jason’s past, his life begins to unravel.

Once again, his family face another round of head-spinning perilous predicaments, plunging their lives into chaos.

Will time repeat itself, or can Jason, once again, alter the future?

Relive the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and evoke the memories in this witty and gripping series. If you like time travel, entwined with mystery, humour, and a dash of romance, you’ll love this fast-paced series by Adrian Cousins.

Edits, Visits, a few days off and beautiful weather.

Posted on 28 March 2025 by Brett Jackson

In Brett’s study this week

This week, I have:

✔ Enjoyed 3 days off
As part of my input session, I have decided to join my wife on her 3 days off, and we spent lots of time together, and just chilled, resting, relaxing, watching Supernatural, and going out and about 🙂

✔ Edited more chapters on Time Clones book 2
I managed to fill in another square this week. Another step towards completion, yay

✔ Spent time at Biddulph Grange Garden
Had a great time at a National Trust place. The weather was gorgeous, and my wife and I met up with a friend, then had a look around the gardens. The Grange is the home of the UKs biggest Urn, and many beautifully sculpted gardens. The house was not open to the public, but the bookshop, and local shops were. Our friend managed to snag a bargain of a 1903 copy of Pride and Prejudice in almost mint condition for only £4.00 – result!

Review: Bear (Notes app)

Posted on 22 March 2025 by Brett Jackson

Bear is my new favourite note-taking app.

If you have read my recent emails, you will know I am all about productivity, and art. As well as stationery, and writing, one of the things I love is  notebooks, and note-taking apps.
I spend a lot of time writing down stuff using a pencil and a6 bullet journals, but I also need some digital notebooks, for stuff such as writing this newsletter.

Today, I have drafted a newsletter using a great little app called Bear. It’s a note-taking app that appears quite simple at first, and rather reminiscent of Apple Notes, Obsidian, and a couple of other apps I have reviewed in this newsletter.

Bear is a a simple note taking app, that has a lot under the hood. When you look underneath, you find it’s quite the little powerhouse, with a fair amount of features, all easy to access, and very clean-looking.

The tutorials are great, explaining how you can use markdown to format your notes, link them, add pictures, and more.

There is no directory structure, instead Bear uses hashtags to categorise your notes. Adding multiple hashtags is possible, and there is a cool feature which the Bear team call nested hashtags, which gives the appearance of folders in the left sidebar, but with the added bonus that it allows you to collapse the main tags.

Let me explain. So, if you have a work folder, you would use the hashtag for work (# work), and if you have multiple projects, you can group them by calling them # work/project1, # work/project2, # work/project3, etc.

The result would look like this.

Work

  • project1
  • project 2
  • project 3

Underneath each project would be the notes you have added the nested hashtags to.

For example, you could set it up like this

Personal

  • Health
  • Finances
  • Family
  • Life
  • ◦ Journal
    • Planner
    • Notes

Business

  • Finances
  • ◦ Taxes
    • Bank statements
  • Projects
  • ◦ Book for children
    • Science fiction books
    • Poetry books
  • Planners
  • ◦ Quarter 1
    • Quarter 2
    • Quarter 3
    • Quarter 4
    • Special events
    • Social media calendar

It also includes a nifty section to view your Today notes, Todos, Locked notes, Archive, and Trash.

You can grab this app from the app store for free and use it as it is, or pay 2.99 per month to use the cloud sync (backups are available in the free version)

When you go Pro, you also get some great themes, including my favourite theme which makes your notes a pastel yellow colour.

The app is available only on Apple, (just look for Bear notes on the Appstore), but it does have an iphone, ipad, and Mac download option, and they seemlessly sync to each other 🙂

One last thing, if you really like this app, and want to import your notes into it from other apps, it allows importing from Evernote, Drafts, Obsidian, Day one, and Markdown folder.

Fancy trying it out? You can download it from the Appstore, just look for Bear Notes.

Fancy trying the pro features for free? The app has a 14 day trial feature, and after that, it’s just £2.99 per month, or £29.99 a year.

I’ve been busy.

Posted on 22 March 2025 by Brett Jackson

This week, I have:

✔ More editing updates
10 chapters closer to Beta Reading, then final release. I am so excited, I decided to have a bash on Canva and create the book cover. Lots of good stuff coming, yay.

✔ Went to a craft show
My wife took me and some fam to a craft show in NEC. As a creative, I am often using outward energy to make my characters come to life, and craft the stories I write. When an opportunity come along to get some inward energy, I seize the opportunity to see what’s happening. This act of being able to enjoy other peoples crafts is quite often inspirational, and fantastic for giving my brain a chance to just stop and gather some ideas. We saw all sorts of cardboard crafting supplies, demos, sewing, knitting and more. The displays were exquisite, and gave me lots of ideas for future book signings 🙂

✔ Spent some time in Rugby
Decided to have a day away from the study and get some fresh air into my lungs. A change of scenery recharged my batteries and the day off was just what I needed. The town is quaint and has lots to offer, although I did notice some areas which offered more of a rugged look, which may take some people out of their comfort zones. When you compare the place ou live, with the places you visit, it can really make you feel thankful that you have what you have got, but also sad for others who have less.

✔ Ran an internet safety session for teenagers.
My previous tech experience gave me the opportunity to help some teenagers understand just how dangerous Social Media and the internet can be. The session lasted approximately 30 minutes. At the start, the children I was teaching were a little uneasy, and probably put off by “some old guy” who was going to teach them about the internet… after all, I’m old, what do I know?
During the session, the teenagers really listened to what I had to say, asking great questions, and by the end of the session, even the adults joined in.
The group has asked me to go back in future, to do a talk about being an Author, and I can’t wait to introduce them to the worlds of writing 🙂

How I combined Checklists and Mindmaps.

Have you ever felt torn between the structure of a checklist and the creative flow of a mindmap? I certainly have. But recently, I created a way to combine both — and it’s been a game-changer for my writing and productivity. Here’s exactly how I did it, and why you might want to try it too.

Edits, Project management tweaks, and Dopamine Habit Trackers

Posted on 14 March 2025 by Brett Jackson

In Brett’s study this week

This week, I have:

✔ Edited more chapters of Time Clones book 2
Another chunk of editing done which takes me up to twenty chapters in the last edits in Time Clones book 2.

✔ Increased my project management, by merging two popular tools together.
I had a great idea recently, and decided to make mind maps, and todo lists work together. Find out more in the Featured Article section.

✔ Calculated the results of my dopamine habit tracker scores.
A little while ago, I watched a video which showed me how to gamify my habits, and tasks. Over the last couple of weeks, this hack has made it more fun to complete my habits, even the ones I don’t enjoy doing, but I know will be good for my health in the long run, such as sleeping before 11pm.
Last week out of a possible score of 54 (8 habits over 7 days), I achieved a score of 15 🙁
This week, I achieved 25 🙂
